If you are a homeowner and you have water issues, it can be a very daunting task. Few issues, short of a natural disaster, can cause more damage to a house than a serious plumbing fault. Luckily, there are many things people can do to stave off plumbing disasters and make sure the damage is minimal when unexpected events do happen.
If you have noisy pipes that sound like hammering or squeaking, this is something that is easy to fix. Anchor any pipes that are exposed. Call a plumber to help with pipes that require you to cut a hole in a wall, ceiling or floor.
If you discover that a water pipe has frozen, find the tap closest to the pipe so when the thaw happens, the water has an exit point. If there is too much pressure within the pipe, it may burst, causing other forms of damage in the home.
If your toilet gets clogged, there is a low level of water in toilet, and the plunger is not working, you may fix the problem by dumping warm water from a bucket into your toilet from about waist level. Do this every time the water level gets too low.
Use a drain strainer to prevent small particles from sliding down your drain and causing clogs. Clean out the one in the kitchen whenever there’s something trapped there that shouldn’t be. Kitchen filters should be changed often, while bathtub filters can be changed as needed.
Orange or pink discoloration on your bathroom fixtures is a solid indication that your water contains too much iron. A water softener will take care of the issue. This can either be done by yourself, or you can hire a professional to come and take care of.
Make sure that you’re always cleaning your garbage disposal regularly. Doing this will save you from having to repair or replace an expensive piece of equipment in the future. By regularly using a mixture of dish soap, cherry pits and citrus rinds, you can ensure that your disposal runs smoothly and smells as fresh as one that is brand new.
Check your fixtures to ensure the overflow holes are clear of debris and mineral build-up. Overflow holes exist to act as a double check in case of an overfilling sink. That may seem unimportant – but it will become a problem if they are clogged. Make sure to clean out the overflow holes each time you do maintenance checks on your sinks.
If water is draining into a dishwasher, it is probably because the hose attached to the sink is not installed correctly. You must have the hose going uphill and then down to get rid of the water in the dishwater.
Having a basic knowledge and being prepared are the first steps to successful plumbing repairs. Any homeowner who is willing to learn more about plumbing will have more favorable outcomes from maintenance and repairs; this may also make the home much safer. Furthermore, taking the initiative to thoroughly research and study the problem in advance of making repairs will save time and money.
